
You have a crack in your windshield. Maybe it has been there a few days, or maybe it turned up this morning courtesy of an aggregate hauler on I-19. Either way you are in that gap between "I should deal with this" and actually booking the appointment. The good news is that there are real things you can do to slow it down in the meantime. The bad news is that several popular "fixes" will make it worse, and in this climate the consequences arrive faster than they would almost anywhere else.
Here's an honest breakdown of what works, what doesn't, and when to stop driving entirely.
Why Cracks Spread in the First Place
Windshield glass is laminated, two layers of tempered glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When a crack forms in the outer layer, it creates a stress point. Three forces drive that crack further across the glass:
- Temperature differential: When the inner and outer surfaces of the glass sit at different temperatures, they expand at different rates and the stress concentrates at the crack tip. This is the dominant force in Tucson, and the reason is the daily swing rather than raw heat. The city routinely moves thirty to forty degrees between the pre-dawn low and the mid-afternoon high, in February as much as in July, and clear high-desert air with very low humidity lets heat radiate away fast after sunset. That is a stress cycle every single day of the year, not just in summer.
- Vibration: Every bump sends micro-vibrations through the glass. The expansion joints on the downtown I-10 viaducts, the fresh chip seal on the county roads out toward Vail, the washboard on a Foothills granite drive, and the cattle guards on the ranch lanes south of Sahuarita all load a cracked windshield harder than smooth pavement does.
- Moisture and grit intrusion: Water in the crack degrades the laminate bond, and in the Sonoran Desert it arrives all at once or not at all. A monsoon cell can drop the air temperature twenty degrees in fifteen minutes and dump cold rain on glass that has been baking since morning, which is a thermal shock and a soaking in the same instant. The rest of the year the intruder is dust: blowing grit packs into an open crack and makes a later resin repair cure cloudy.
Addressing these three forces is the entire strategy for slowing a crack.
Step 1: Manage Temperature. This Is the Most Critical Factor in Arizona
Temperature stress is the single biggest driver of crack growth here, and it works in both directions depending on the season. Practically, that means:
- Park in shade, and use a sunshade. This is the single highest-value habit in Tucson. With more than 350 days of sun a year and very little natural shade, a dashboard here gets brutally hot on a clear day even in January. A garage downtown or near the U of A, the structures at Tucson Mall or Park Place, a covered space at the airport, or a carport at home all buy you real time. When shade is not an option, a reflective sunshade keeps the inner glass surface cooler and genuinely narrows the differential you create the moment you switch the A/C on.
- Go easy on the A/C in summer. This is the one that costs Tucson drivers the most windshields, and most people have never thought about it. Getting into a car that has been on asphalt since ten in the morning and putting the A/C on maximum, pointed straight at the glass, creates precisely the gradient that runs a crack. Vent the cabin with the windows down for a minute first, aim the vents down and away from the windshield, then bring the fan up over a few minutes. It costs you almost nothing and it is the difference between a repair and a replacement more often than people believe.
- Go easy on the defroster in winter, too. The same mistake in reverse, and Tucson does get freezing nights — more of them out in Vail and up in the Foothills than downtown. Blasting hot air at frost-covered glass on a 28-degree morning runs a crack just as fast as the A/C does in July. Start on low with the temperature moderate and let it come up. Never use hot water to clear ice. And watch the monsoon: from mid-June through September a cell can build over the Catalinas and put cold rain on a hot windshield with no warning at all. If one is coming and your glass is cracked, get the vehicle under cover.
- Don't use the rear defroster if you have a rear window crack. The heating elements embedded in the rear glass create localized heat along the defroster lines. If a crack runs across one of those lines, the temperature differential at the crack can cause rapid spreading.
Step 2: Reduce Vibration When Driving
You may not be able to avoid driving on a cracked windshield for a day or two. If you have to drive, you can reduce the vibration load on the glass:
- Slow down on the rough stretches. The viaduct joints through downtown, the truck-rutted right lane on I-10, fresh chip seal out around Vail, and the cattle guards on the ranch roads south of Sahuarita all push more vibration into the glass than smooth pavement does. Easing off on those specific sections makes a real difference.
- Avoid aggressive lane changes and hard braking. Sharp inputs flex the body shell, and that flex travels into the glass. The stop-and-go on Speedway and Grant at rush hour, and the constant braking coming down the Catalina Highway, are both hard on a cracked windshield. Smooth and gradual is better.
- Lower the bass on your stereo. Significant bass vibrations do transmit to the windshield. If your crack is already a concern, this is a reasonable precaution.
- Keep windows slightly cracked when driving at highway speed. Interior air pressure differentials at highway speed can create suction on the windshield. A small window gap equalizes the pressure and removes this additional stress.
Step 3: Keep the Crack Dry
Moisture breaks down the laminate bond at the crack, and in a dry climate the problem is less constant damp than sudden soakings and blowing dust. Practical steps:
- Avoid car washes entirely. High-pressure water drives moisture deep into the crack and the rotating equipment flexes the glass, which is enough to extend a crack in one pass. If you must clean the exterior, hand wash and keep a gentle spray well away from the damage. This is worth the discipline in spring, when a dusty windshield makes the car wash tempting every few days.
- Use a small piece of clear packing tape over the crack as a temporary measure. This is not a repair. The adhesive can actually interfere with professional repair resin if left too long, but a single layer of clear tape on the outside of the crack for a day or two keeps water out in a pinch. Don't leave it on more than 48 hours, and let your technician know it was applied.
- Avoid clear nail polish as a sealant. This is a common internet suggestion that creates real problems. Nail polish fills the crack with a material that's incompatible with professional repair resin, and it can damage the outer glass surface in a way that makes the repair more complicated and expensive. Skip it entirely.
What About DIY Windshield Repair Kits?
Hardware store windshield repair kits use a resin injection system similar to what professionals use. On a fresh, clean chip, the size of a quarter or smaller, they can work adequately. On a crack, they generally don't. The resin in consumer kits isn't formulated to flow into a crack the way professional resins are, and the injection apparatus isn't designed for crack repair geometry.
More importantly: once you've injected resin into a crack, a professional technician may not be able to clean it out and start fresh. Using a DIY kit on a crack can turn a repairable chip into a replacement situation. If you're uncertain whether your damage is a chip or a crack, call for an assessment first.
When to Stop Driving. Full Stop
Some crack situations mean you shouldn't be driving at all, regardless of how inconvenient that is:
- The crack runs through your direct line of sight, the band immediately in front of the steering wheel. Even a small crack there is both a safety problem and a legal one: A.R.S. § 28-957.01 requires that a Arizona windshield be free of anything obstructing the driver's clear view, and an officer can cite you on that basis.
- The crack has reached both edges of the windshield. At this point the structural integrity of the glass is significantly compromised.
- You can feel the crack through the glass when you press lightly on the outside surface. This indicates the inner layer may be compromised.
- The crack has spidered into multiple branches from a central impact point. This type of damage typically cannot be repaired regardless of size.
