Why Tucson is Hard on Windshields

It is the heat cycling, not the raw number on the thermometer. A windshield that has sat in a Tucson lot through a July afternoon is far hotter than the 105 on the bank sign, and the glass, the frit band, and the urethane underneath have all expanded with it. Then you start the car and put the A/C on full: the inner face contracts against an outer face that is still baking, and that gradient across three millimeters of laminate pries the chip open. It happens twice a day, every day, from May through September. Underneath that sits the slower damage — Tucson gets more than 350 days of sun a year, and that constant ultraviolet load steadily breaks down the PVB interlayer bonded between the two sheets of glass, which is why older windshields give up sooner. Winter is no reprieve: a 75-degree afternoon followed by a night in the high twenties runs the same cycle in reverse.

If your windshield has a crack near the edge, one longer than about three inches, or one sitting in your direct line of sight, deal with it before you keep driving. Arizona law is explicit on the point: A.R.S. § 28-957.01 requires an adequate windshield, and because the statute never defines “adequate,” an officer can cite you for damage that interferes with your view.
